While by no means the first to ever use bronze in a timepiece – nautical instruments have long appreciated the alloy’s benefits – it was undoubtedly Panerai and its 2011 Bronzo that started the current trend for the material.
Following the immediate sell-out of that watch, brands including IWC, Zenith, Blancpain, and Tudor have all used various different versions of the humble alloy (typically a blend of copper and tin, with other metals such as aluminium, manganese, nickle and zinc incorporated) to create watches that have proved as appealing to buyers as those made from the most precious of metals.
