ANGOLA â A year and a half into his fifth and likely final term in office, Mayor Dick Hickman is celebrating the biggest milestone in his political career to date: 20 years in office.
âI never thought Iâd be here this long, or that Iâd end up loving this job as much as I do,â Hickman said during a wide-ranging 40-minute interview in his second-story office at Angola City Hall on March 12.
âIn fact, being a Democrat in a Republican area, I didnât figure Iâd get reelected the first time.â
Hickman, 73, was sworn in as Angolaâs 15th mayor on March 5, 2001, after the death of Mayor Edwin W. âBillâ Selman on Feb. 7, 2001. Selman, who was suffering from cancer, spent months grooming Hickman, then a park board member, for the position.
