the neighborhoods, the schools. even in the hospital, mexican-americans and anglos were treated in separate wards. but when irene garza was born in 1934, her parents were determined that she and her sister josephine would transcend the discrimination together. we were very tight. we were very close because it was like us against all of those that were prejudiced against us. prejudiced against hispanics? hispanics, yes. and my dad fostered that because we re in it together. in their parents day, the public schools for mcallen s hispanic children only went to fifth grade, but the garzas had bigger dreams for their daughters. from the beginning we were told, oh, when you go to college, when you go to college. it was something that was just a thing that was going to happen.
