Gauteng prepares for third wave by opening new hospital in West Rand

Johannesburg - The Gauteng provincial government has prepared for the third wave of coronavirus by opening a new hospital in the West Rand.
Gauteng Premier David Makhura announced on Friday that the Gauteng province was in the grip of a Covid-19 third wave.
“Having seen over 1 000 cases a day we cannot afford to close down the province s economy but we definitely want to see an increase in restrictions,” said Makhura.
The premier was speaking during the official opening of a refurbished mining hospital in Carletonville on the West Rand with Infrastructure Development MEC Tasneem Motara and Health MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi.

JOHANNESBURG - HARMONY Gold Mining Company, which is chaired by mining mogul Patrice Motsepe, expects to post a 339 percent surge in profits during the six months to the end of December as the strong bullion price rally and the bargain acquisition of AngloGold Ashanti’s remaining South African assets pay off.
Harmony said on Friday that its net profit would climb between R5.7 billion and R5.9bn – up between 325 and 339 percent from a year earlier, also buoyed by higher production and foreign exchange translation gains.
The group said net profit for the interim was estimated to be between 283 and 297 percent higher at between $349 million (R5.12bn) and $361m, compared with a year earlier.

May 24 (Reuters) - The number of deaths in the United States from the new coronavirus was heading towards the 100,000 mark.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Saturday that the toll had risen 1,852 to reach 96,002. It also reported 1,595,885 cases, an increase of 24,268 from its previous count. Lawmakers from Britain’s ruling Conservative Party on Sunday called for the resignation of Dominic Cummings, the senior adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who travelled 400 km (250 miles) to northern England during the coronavirus lockdown. Americans flocked to beaches and outdoor areas on Saturday, snarling roadways and forcing some closures on the Memorial Day weekend after weeks in lockdown.
