Indonesian Navy rules out human error, overloading as factors in submarine sinking

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL) has ruled out human error, and refuted suggestions that its doomed Cakra (Type 209/1300)-class diesel submarine (SSK) was carrying more personnel than the boat was designed for at the time of its disappearance.

(402), was first reported as missing on 21 April while it was preparing for a training mission in the Bali Sea, and was discovered sunk at a depth of about 830 m four days later. All personnel onboard have been declared by the TNI-AL as dead.

Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo, flag-officer-in-command of the Philippine Navy (PN), sent his condolences to the Indonesian Navy on Monday, April 26, after the death of 53 sailors aboard a sunken submarine in Bali coast.
Indonesian authorities confirmed Sunday that the missing KRI Nanggala (402) was discovered about 850 meters below the Bali Sea, wrecked into three parts with no record of any survivor.
Bacordo sent his condolences to Admiral Yudo Argono, Indonesia’s Chief of Staff, and the entire Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Laut) which is a close ally of the Philippine Navy.
“Their loss is also our loss as they are close to the heart of the Philippine Navy being our ASEAN neighbor and strategic partner,” Bacordo said.

An international effort to locate and rescue the crew of a missing Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL) diesel-electric submarine (SSK) is being hampered by a malfunction in the boat’s communication system.

Nanggala (402), had been reported as missing and was deemed to be in distress after missing a scheduled reporting call with the TNI-AL at about 03:00 h (local time) on 21 April while it was preparing for a training operation in the Bali Sea.
