Constantine Village Council on Monday approved an engineering service agreement

By Angie Birdsall Special to the Journal Constantine Village Council on Monday approved an engineering service agreement presented by Fleis & VandenBrink engineers Jeff Pugh, Joe Benjamin and Liz Girgen. Process manager Pugh said the village s new sewer plant is expected to be up and running by January 2024. Pugh said engineering and legal expenses for the new plant could cost up to $1 million in the next year. The village recently obtained a bond anticipation note to cover the amount, which will be repaid through a $13.3 million USDA loan. The interest rate is 1.5 percent for the 40-year USDA loan. The wastewater treatment facility in Constantine was close in 1997 and sends effluent to the wastewater treatment plant in Three Rivers.

By Angie Birdsall Special to the Journal Constantine Public Schools Board of Education on Monday discussed putting a cap on school of choice. It was noted that some students yo-yo between schools. Superintendent Jim Wisely said communication is the key and a decision must be made regarding enrollment.  “Do we want to continue to expand like we are now by adding students, or do we want to put a cap on it? Wisely said. Board president Terry Burgess said the school needs controlled growth, not “chaotic” growth. The school board decided to study the issue further at future meetings.  In a separate matter, Wiseley said there has been a problem registering kindergarten-age students in a timely manner.

Council gets upgrade regarding bridge project By Angie Birdsall Special to the Journal Mark Honeysett, Constantine village manager, provided an update to council members Monday regarding the U.S. 131 bridge project MDOT began work on the bridge March 29. One lane is open for traffic. Greg Finilla, MDOT project manager, said that in mid-July, the northbound lane will open and southbound will close. The first week in June and second week in September, the bridge will need to be closed completely to set new beams in place.  Finilla estimates the bridge will be completed by Oct. 29. Chip-seal through the village will take place May-June 2022.
