A new year, a new crop of exciting-looking restaurants popping up around the Bay Area. In Livermore, a pair of sushi-restaurant vets are opening a raw bar that highlights local sakes. A sprawling food hall with a dozen restaurants is scheduled for downtown San Jose, an oyster bar with whole cracked Dungeness crabs is coming to Oakland's Jack London Square and a Sicilian joint based on good ol' momma's cooking is launching in Danville. In no particular order, here are the 10 of the most eagerly anticipated restaurants expected to make their debut in 2024, and a couple more inching closer to opening day.

Dungeness crab season is finally here! Local crab lovers have been eagerly anticipating the start, which has been delayed for the past two months due to migrating whales, crabbing equipment lost in a fire and drawn-out price negotiations between local crab fleets and wholesale buyers. Now that the season has started, supply is limited and prices are high, which also means, disappointingly, we won’t be seeing local crab on restaurant takeout menus for too much longer. So get crackin’!
AGRODOLCE Chef Angelo D’Alo tells Nosh that Agrodolce is serving local crab in three dishes: Cioppino with half Dungeness crab ($50); a whole crab served “salad style,” chilled with garlic, lemon and chiles ($48); and pan-sauteed with two different Sicilian chiles and heirloom tomatoes ($48).

I’ll be home for Christmas, as you will likely be too. With indoor and outdoor dining on hold, and gatherings with outside households strongly discouraged as COVID-19 cases rise, I’ve been busy collecting a list of East Bay restaurants cooking up holiday meals for takeout, many offering feasts that feed two to four people. Some restaurants are offering kits that require some cooking or re-heating at home, while others will have your meals hot and ready to eat. And some spots might not be doing full meals, but have goodies and gift baskets to spread some much-needed holiday cheer.
