GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â Bars and restaurants are open for the first time since November with tight restrictions in place. Establishments have to adhere to 25% capacity and are also subjected to a curfew.
As part of the change, historic Polish halls and VFW posts are allowed to reopen. These types of establishments allow members and their visitors in, but they also must adhere to the same rules and regulations applied to other establishments.
In Grand Rapids, the Fifth Street Hall reopened on Monday. Located on the corner of Davis and Fifth Street on the West side, the hall welcomed members back. Its only source of income is through membership fees and by serving customers within the hall s walls.
Civil rights complaint filed against the City of Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. â A former Kalamazoo resident has filed a civil rights complaint alleging the city was specifically zoned so that a paper mill would be near primarily African American neighborhoods.
The complaint was filed in late 2020 with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights by Brandi Crawford-Johnson, who moved to the area next to Graphic Packaging. The plant manufactures paperboard and paper-based packaging for products related to the food, beverage, household, personal care, and pet product industries.
Crawford-Johnson is taking several different legal avenues against both the paper mill and the City of Kalamazoo. Previously, she filed a class-action lawsuit against Graphic Packaging. According to the lawsuit obtained by FOX 17, the strong odor emitting from the plant caused some residents to believe they have developed respiratory issues including asthma and COPD. O

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â While the United Kingdom variant has only recently been detected for the first time in Michigan, scientists at the state lab in Lansing have been monitoring mutations and variances for several months.
So far, the team at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has analyzed roughly 6,000 samples from all across that state that were detected with unusual findings from COVID tests through counties or other clinical settings. Those samples are then tested at the lab in Lansing and in Ann Arbor, in partnership with the University of Michigan.

HOLLAND, Mich. â Indoor fitness classes can once again resume, which is an announcement bringing relief for elite gymnasts eager to have a more regular training schedule.
Holland-based Champion Gymnastics USA has been managing the on-again-off-again practice sessions through the last several months. Under Governor Whitmer s orders, indoor fitness came to a halt and resumed for private instruction.
Monday marks the first day that indoor fitness classes can resume, allowing Champion Gymnastics USA to operate at 25% capacity for group sessions.
During the summer months, the gym held outdoor sessions for elite gymnasts eager to maintain their fitness level. While many were able to increase their skills, many weren t able to progress during the summer months as much as they normally would prior to the competition season.
