This week, the prodigal team returns to face No. 4 UCLA and No. 21 USC. The Bears will defend home turf at Witter Rugby Field against the Bruins on Friday, followed by the Trojans on Sunday.
These two matches will mark the first time the blue and gold have faced both Southern California teams this year. After breaking even last weekend with a 1-1 record against Arizona State and Arizona, Cal has a golden opportunity to prove itself against both Los Angeles heavyweights.
This “California Clash” begins Friday against the highly-ranked and extremely competitive Bruins. UCLA has scored a stunning 26 goals this season and leads the conference in save percentage (0.873) as well as goals against-average (0.56).
Cal ignites against No.16 Arizona State, extinguished by Arizona

Over the weekend, the Bears had a chance to bring the heat to the Arizona desert but only caught fire against one of their two opponents.
On Friday, Cal women’s soccer edged out No. 16 Arizona State in a double overtime thriller, 2-1. Two days later, it cooled down in a 1-0 shutout loss to Arizona.
“The win over a highly ranked Arizona State was the highlight, but playing double overtime took its toll,” head coach Neil McGuire said in an email. “Today versus Arizona we scored an unfortunate own goal which meant we had to chase the game the whole time and just couldn’t find a way to score.”

You win some, you lose some: No. 10 Cal breaks even in first 2 home games

As one of the nation’s best, the No. 10 Cal women’s soccer team was supposed to stretch out its winning streak for longer than just two games. But the concept of “supposed to” isn’t necessarily one that always holds weight in sports.
After firing off seven more shots, one more shot on goal and six more corners than Colorado, Cal’s performance Friday was near perfect. Yet it wasn’t quite enough to snag a third-straight victory.
“As a team, disappointment on Friday was just not being able to finish,” said Keely Roy, a sophomore striker and transfer from USF. “It was almost more disappointing when you know you’re almost the better team in holding more possession and having more chances.”
