Replacement of the former rail bridge has been completed above the A57 Hyde Road in Gorton, Manchester as part of a £5.9M scheme allowing the route to be widened, reducing traffic congestion.
Until now, a 300m section of the road was narrowed from dual carriageway to a single lane in either direction where the route ran under a 19
th century rail bridge.
According to EWCE, much of the abutment work and earthworks were undertaken during a pre-construction phase to minimise impact on road users. Adding certainty to the programme saw the contractor upgrade the sheet piles used for the new 150m long, 6m high retaining walls to ensure driveability and undertake the piling work from an innovative temporary works structure that saw the rig positioned at a higher level than the road to further reduce impact on traffic flow.
