Greg Abbott takes off his mask during a press conference on Sept. 17. Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order Tuesday that would ban local governments and public schools from requiring masks, as school district leaders debated whether to completely lift mask requirements or keep the restrictions in place until more school-aged children were vaccinated against the coronavirus. The order goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. Friday and would prohibit governmental entities, including counties, cities and public health authorities, from requiring face masks. Public schools may leave face covering requirements in effect until June 4. Entities that defy Abbott s order could face a fine of up to $1,000.
