Many of Indiana’s youth such as Annabel took to the podium Friday, March 19, on the southside steps of the Indianapolis Statehouse, urging the state to declare a climate emergency. This climate emergency declaration would mean that the state of Indiana acknowledges that climate change is a public health threat and national security threat. It means our state legislature announces their recognition of the severity of the climate crisis, and puts it on record that they will advocate for sustainable legislative actions, as well as take emergency action before it’s to

Environmental Efforts In Indiana

To mark Earth Day we learn about the efforts of four people who were recognized for their work in their communities addressing issues around the environment. We also talk to the leader of IU s Environmental Resilience Institute, which recognized a total of 13 people across Indiana for their work.

The world has heard it on the radio and on television: “Pollution is killing our planet.” People have seen posters throughout the halls that demand they recycle before it is too late. Talks around the dinner table have led to debates about if the words are true or not: climate change.
For many, climate change does not mean anything. Many are not educated on the fact that the climate truly is changing, and not for the better.
Riverside High School senior Angel Akinleye, a high school student leader for Earth Charter Indiana said, “Climate change is the climate changing in a negative way, and it is impacted by human beings. We are the ones who contributed to climate change.”
