The deaths were all reported in East New Britain province, taking PNG s overall death toll from the coronavirus to 133.
The latest update from the country s Pandemic Response Controller reported 245 more confirmed cases in 13 provinces, taking the total number in PNG to 13,242.
All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville have reported cases.
East New Britain is reported to have confirmed 834 cases, the fourth highest number of any province, with the National Capital District still recording the highest number with 4,735.
However, with limited testing and delays in reporting of case numbers from various provinces, the real figure of those infected with Covid-19 in PNG is expected to be significantly higher.
We also note the proliferation of local initiatives by individuals, community groups, churches and NGOs aimed at tackling different aspects of GBV in different parts of PNG, often entailing innovative and socially attuned forms of intervention.
Many of the official efforts at national level rightly focus on improving state-based institutions, such as the legal system and key agencies like the police. These areas are critical as the legal system often fails to protect victims and the police are ill-equipped to effectively respond. The police in particular are understaffed, poorly trained and mostly consist of men (only 13% of PNG’s constabulary are female), and have a limited presence in many parts of the country.

Doctors at the Angau Memorial Hospital walked off their jobs yesterday afternoon after being denied response from the hospital administration and the Department of Personnel Management on outstanding gratuities and staff shortage.
The Morobe PHA National Doctors Union had presented a number of petitions on these concerns to the administration, however, claimed that they never received any tangible response.
The Union stated three reasons for their protest.
Failure by the hospital management to respond to numerous petitions;
Failure to respond to the medical shortage issue; and
Failure to honor the annual gratuity payments for the year 2020 to contracted officers.
