Cardinals win playoff title, earn NCAA bid (5/26/2021)
It wasn’t supposed to end this way.
The Saint Mary’s University (SMU) baseball team had its sights set on its first-ever Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoff title and the Cardinals’ first NCAA Division III National Tournament appearance since 1993.
If you asked coach Nick Winecke what his favorite number was, he might have answered number one the number he wore during his playing days at Saint Mary’s University.
Following Saturday’s Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoff winner-take-all game against the University of St. Thomas (UST), however, Winecke would probably have a different favorite number 29.

If Saint Mary’s University baseball coach Nick Winecke was concerned that his squad might show any ill effects after dropping the first two games of their three-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against St. Olaf College, the Cardinals quickly put those fears to rest.
Saint Mary’s erupted for five, third-inning runs and their offense never showed signs of letting up, as the Cardinals scored in each of the final five innings they batted en route to an 11-0 victory at Mark Almli Field.
The Cardinals, coming off 8-4 and 14-6 losses to the Oles at Max Molock Field on Saturday, started slow being held off the scoreboard in each of their first two at-bats.
Cardinals battle Crown College to split (4/7/2021)
The Saint Mary’s University (SMU) baseball team scored 20 runs in its non-conference doubleheader against Crown College last week including at least one run in 11 of the 13 innings.
Saint Mary’s scored in every inning in the opener, rolling to a 10-4 victory.
And in the nightcap, the Cardinals put together a second straight 10-run performance, only to have Crown propelled by a seven-run second inning hold off a wild SMU comeback attempt to earn the split with a 12-10 victory.
The Cardinals were nothing if not consistent in the opener, scoring in all six innings in which they batted including single runs in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings, while plating two runs in the second, and breaking the game open with a four-run sixth.
