If you haven’t made the drive to West Bend to tour the Shrine of the Grotto of the Redemption, you’re missing out on a true treasure that people from all over the world visit just to experience each year.
Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the huge Grotto is actually a series of nine separate grottos, each depicting a scene in the life of Christ.
Built beginning in 1912 by Father Paul Matthias Dobberstein after recovering from a serious bout of pneumonia, the Grotto was finally completed after 52 laborious years by full-time collaborator Matt Szerensce, who took on the job right after completing high school.
