everybody. i m lindsey riser in for katy tur in new york city. the big news today, the potentially historic battle surrounding house republican leadership and the growing resistance to kevin mccarthy, as he scrambles to find and secure the 218 votes he needs to become the next speaker. despite that, we learned over the weekend that mccarthy has already moved into the speaker suite in the capitol, if he secures the votes, no problem, but if he doesn t, he ll have to move out and that is seeming like more of a possibility by the day. before sunday, the number of republicans openly opposing kevin mccarthy was five but that number has appeared to grow after nine more republicans released a letter saying that mccarthy s concessions up to this point have not been enough to win them over. one of the original five, congressman bob good says the plan is to deny kevin mccarthy the votes he needs and see what happens. what we ll do is we ll block kevin. i suspect there will be 10 or 1
times, this is a relatively new development that was triggered by cassidy hutchinson s testimony last month. the times says a number of hutchinson s key assertion, including the idea that trump knew his supporters were armed and wanted to lead them to the capital, were new to investigators. quote, in conversations at the department the day after ms. hutchinson s appearance, some of which included deputy attorney general lisa monaco, officials talked about the pressure that the testimony created to scrutinize mr. trump s potential criminal liability and whether he intended to break the law. ms. hutchinson s disclosure seemed to have opened a path to broaching the most sensitive topic of all, mr. trump s own actions ahead of the attack. exploring the link between the former president and the extremists who traveled to d.c. on the 6th. axios has learned the committee has evidence that some pro trump groups were planning to come closer to the date of the inauguration but chang
we hold our hearings next month we wish to provide members the opportunity to discuss these matters with the committee voluntarily. regrettably, the individuals receiving subpoenas today have refused and we are forced to take this step to make sure the committee uncovers facts concerning january 6th. we urge our colleagues to comply with the law and do their patriotic duty and cooperate with our investigation as hundreds of other witnesses have done, and the committee lays out in clear detail just why they need the testimony of these five congressmen pointing to their roles in multiple aspects of the trump coup plot. the committee writes this about jim jordan, representative jim jordan was in communication with trump on january 6th and participated in meetings and discussions throughout late 2020 and early 2021 about strategies for overturning the 2020 election. regarding scott perry, the committee says, he was, quote, directly involved with efforts to corrupt the department
but democrats and republicans meanwhile on the house oversight committee are still debating the matter right now as we speak, and were anticipating several amendments to continue to be introduced, including an amendment introduced by democrats that would essentially bar the members, scott perry, andy bigs and jim jordan, the three who have previously defied congressional subpoenas from voting on this contempt resolution if and when it does make it to the house floor for a full vote. let me ask you, the house republicans say that their ultimate goal here is to impeach president biden, and they need hunter biden to help gather evidence. what evidence have they so far gathered, what evidence do they have to even open this impeachment inquiry? that s really the most important question of all, that republicans have yet to answer. they have still not been able to produce any evidence that supports their allegations and the entire thesis of this investigation that president biden, these a
together a coalition within his own conference to get the bill through. getting various factions on board in his narrowly divided conference and pushing this through the house on the narrowest of margins. passed on a vote of 217 to 215. there were four republicans that voted against this plan. that is all he could afford to lose. if he lost one more, this bill would have collapsed on the house floor. but he was able to win most of his members. other than these four. that is andy bigs of arizona and other conservatives of tennessee, matt gaetz of florida and ken buck of colorado. but now this bill has passed, you heard kevin mccarthy right there. they are going to make the argument going forward that the house is the only chamber to have passed a bill that would raise the national debt limit. it would do just that. raise it until next year. or sometime in march or if it reaches $1.5 trillion more in spending, that is what this bill would do. along with a wide range of
