But as of Monday afternoon, the council was yet to receive any nominations. While one local government expert said that wasn t necessarily cause for concern, another warned that there was a risk that someone with little interest in governance would go for the role simply for the pay packet. Massey University local government researcher and senior lecturer Dr Andy Asquith was not surprised by the lack of interest in the position. It was a symptom of a “disconnect” between local government and the general public, he said. “It feeds into the bigger narrative that people will only show interest in terms of standing and following through and voting if they can see relevance.
