GRAND FORKS AND FARGO - University of North Dakota President Andy Armacost will preside over his first spring general commencement, a virtual event that will be available Saturday, May 15, after 10 a.m. The ceremony will remain available online after that time.
Candidates eligible to graduate number 1,780, including 1265 undergraduate, 493 master’s, and 22 doctoral students. Law and M.D. students graduated last week in separate ceremonies.
Armacost will give a short commencement address, which will be followed by the conferral of degrees. The name of each graduate will be read and accompanied by a slide with their name, degree, and a submitted photo. They will receive their diploma and copies of the printed program by mail.
Wrote one: “I miss walking on campus to study at the library. I miss my friends, sorority sisters and Greek events. I miss attending tailgates and celebrating football wins with the boys. I miss the classroom … interacting with classmates … and staying after class to have my professors walk me through life.”

Sociology professor Daphne Pedersen is the latest to receive UND’s highest academic honor.
Pedersen has been named a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.
She joined the UND faculty in 2004,
Biology professor Vasyl Tkach (vuh-SEEL tuh-CATCH) was similiarly honored last week.
The criteria for selection include “demonstrated achievement across research, teaching, and service,” with “significant national or regional recognition in any one of these missions”… “significant professional contributions” throughout the nominee’s career… and recognition by UND colleagues “as a faculty member who has made a valuable contribution to the quality of UND’s academic programs.”
