Arauz, 36, wants to renegotiate a US$6.5-billion debt with the International Monetary Fund, alter anti-narcotics agreements with the United States, and even hold President Lenín Moreno legally responsible for his handling of the hard-hit country s coronavirus response. Despite wanting to renegotiate the IMF agreement, we re not going to declare a moratorium against the IMF, Arauz told AFP.

Buenos Aires Times | Arauz, Lasso advance to Ecuador presidential run-off

Ecuadorean Presidential candidate Guillermo Lasso. | AFP/JOSÉ SÁNCHEZ LINDAO Leftist economist Andrés Arauz will face conservative Guillermo Lasso in the upcoming second round of Ecuador s presidential election, officials said Sunday, in a vote marred by fraud allegations and taking place amid a worsening economic crisis. Thirty-six-year-old Arauz won the first round with 32.72 percent of the vote – not enough to win outright. His opponent in the second round will be ex-banker Lasso, who took 19.74 percent to beat left-wing indigenous leader Yaku Pérez s 19.39 percent, according to the final results of the February 7 poll. The run-off will take place on April 11, after the first round results were approved by four out of the five members of the National Electoral Council (CNE) at a meeting that lasted into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 65-year-old Catholic, who walks with a stick due to a spinal injury from a botched medical procedure, says he is even prepared to cooperate with his opponent Andrés Arauz. I m not ruling out an agreement with any Ecuadoran who acts in good faith, who understands the great objective to take the country forwards, Lasso told AFP following a meeting with members of the Puruha indigenous community in the central town of Colta.
