Android 12 Developer Preview 3 is Now Available!
Another build closer to Android 12 beta.
Google dropped the
Android 12 Developer Preview 3 on us this morning to help developers further test the newest version of Android before it goes to beta. This is likely the last big preview build before beta too, so testing is going to be important at this stage.
In this new Developer Preview 3, Google still isn’t ready to talk about any new features that you’ll get to play with and is instead still talking about the technical moves developers need to make to their apps. The big highlights here (so far) are customized haptic feedback in apps, “frictionless linking” to apps, and a new app launch animation.

It s been just over a month since Google released the second developer preview for Android 12 and today, the company is now pushing out the third version. This preview adds haptic feedback options for developers, new app launch animations and improved link management in apps, which are features we expect to arrive in the next major version of Android.
In a blog post, VP of engineering Dave Burke wrote that Android 12 will offer expanded tools for creating informative haptic feedback for UI events, immersive and delightful effects for gaming, and attentional haptics for productivity. Specifically, game developers can now access multiple, different actuators independently in game controllers to create synchronized effects or different haptic effects across the device. Google has finally started the rollout of Android 12 Developer Preview 3 for Pixel phones today. If our numbers are correct, this should be the final developer-quality preview before the Android 12 Beta starts next month. For those wondering, the DP3 is an incremental update for stability and performance.
Developers are advised to get apps ready for consumer Beta by releasing a compatible update over the new few weeks.

Other than a few bug fixes here and there, Google has been pretty quiet on the Android 12 front, despite I/O coming in just a few short weeks. Today, Google has released the third Developer Preview for Android 12, which is equipped with a few different developer-focused features to access the camera and haptic hardware.
In the accompanying blog post, Dave Burke, VP of Engineering, detailed some of the new changes that are available in the latest release. Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s new this time around:
Improved app launch experience – In Android 12 we’re making app startup a more consistent and delightful experience. We’ve added a new app launch animation for all apps from the point of launch, a splash screen showing the app icon, and a transition to the app itself.
