NICOSIA Coming forward after a Greek Olympic gold medalist said she was the victim of a sexual assault by a sailing federation official in 1998, Cypriot skeet shooting champion Andri Eleftheriou repeated a similar allegation and has now reportedly given the name to police.
Eleftheriou, 36, had first made the claim in 2018 but it’s rare for women on the island to speak out about sexual harassment or assaults, said Agence France-Presse, which reported she has now identified the alleged attackers the paper didn’t name.
The Commonwealth Games gold medalist said she was encouraged to speak out by Cyprus Justice Minister Emily Yiolitis, saying the alleged assault happened at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Several other women from the field of sports and beyond have now also spoken out about alleged harassment, and the Greek Supreme Court has urged prosecutors to make responding to such claims a priority.
An Olympic sailing champion has accused a top sporting official in Greece of sexual abuse, the countryâs first high-profile accusation of sexual assault and abuse of power since the #MeToo movement swept the world in recent years, bringing down powerful figures in the media, politics and sports.
Claims by Sofia Bekatorou, a Greek Olympic sailing champion, that she was sexually assaulted by the official 23 years ago, when she was 21, have prompted a wave of support and an unusually open debate in a country where studies suggest sexual harassment is prevalent.

The Shooting Federation of Cyprus is aware of at least five incidents of alleged sexual abuse after Commonwealth Games champion Andri Eleftheriou gave the name of an alleged attacker to the police.
Eleftheriou had first spoken out about being subject to abuse in 2018, but the incident is back under the spotlight after Greek sailor Sofia Bekatorou made similar allegations this week.
Bekatorou, who won gold in the 470 class at a home Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, said she was sexually abused in 1998 by a high-ranking member of the Hellenic Sailing Federation.
This sparked other victims of abuse to share their experiences.
