Military members from the United States and Morocco met at the end of January to finalize plans for the annual Exercise “African Lion.” The exercise will resume in 2021 after being severely curtailed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
U.S. troops and their Moroccan hosts were scouting the locations where most of the exercise will take place. The 17th iteration of African Lion 2021 will involve over 10,000 troops from nine countries. It will span three continents and six countries.
The annual exercise is designed to improve interoperability and mutual understanding of each nation’s tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs). The exercise began in the 1990s as a biennial event. It was sponsored by the U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and conducted by U.S. Army personnel in cooperation with the Moroccan Armed Forces. 13 VICENZA, Italy – Maj. Gen. Andrew M. Rohling, the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa commander, visited U.S. Soldiers at Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa on Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. Rohling also met with representatives of the Djibouti Armed Forces (FAD).
During the meeting, Rohling commended the FAD leadership for hosting U.S. Soldiers at Camp Lemonnier, and discussed future training that would strengthen relationships between FAD and SETAF-AF personnel.
Rohling also discussed the FAD’s Rapid Intervention Battalion’s progress. A team from the 2nd Security Force Assistance Brigade is collaborating with the RIB leadership to develop the capability to rapidly respond to humanitarian and security crises in Djibouti and increase readiness. He received a brief on the RIB’s training progress, and witnessed a small unit exercise, demonstrating the RIB’s readiness.
