Lawsuit seeks to void contracts for lawyers hired by GOP leaders ahead of redistricting

A taxpayer group that includes the head of the Madison teachers union asked a judge on Wednesday to void taxpayer-funded contracts Republican legislators have signed with private law firms to represent GOP interests in an anticipated fight over redistricting. Milfred and Hands break down last week s unusual State of the State speech. Because of COVID-19, Gov. Tony Evers delivered his annual address as a recorded video message, rather than in person. Yet Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and other Republican lawmakers showed up in the Assembly chambers at the state Capitol in Madison anyway. That s where Vos delivered the GOP rebuttal to Evers speech from the stage as if he were the governor, drawing cheers from a friendly partisan crowd. Is Vos thinking of challenging Evers for governor next year, or just trying to show him up? Milfred and Hands analyze and play clips from this big night in state politics.

MTI demands local, state leaders prioritize teachers for vaccines, MMSD working with health officials

By Logan Rude Mar 1, 2021 2:41 PM MADISON, Wis. Madison’s teacher union is calling on local and state leaders to prioritize teachers for COVID-19 vaccination now that educators are eligible under the state’s latest guidance. In the statement shared Monday, Madison Teachers Inc. said getting school district workers vaccinated will help address the racial disparities in vaccination rates in Dane County. As of Monday, 17.2% of Dane County residents had received at least one dose of vaccine. Of those, only 5.9% of Latinx-identifying residents and 8.4% of Black residents had received the vaccine. That’s compared to 16% of white residents who have received at least one dose.
