Chris Martin, an artist, athlete and acolyte for decades at his Portland-area church, died in early December after succumbing to COVID-19 related complications. He was 68.
Martin’s was one of at least 472 lives cut short last month due to COVID-19, far and away a record in the state thus far. Nearly as many Oregonians died in December as in the first six months of the pandemic combined.
The incredible losses come as the state and nation continue to break monthly death records and as vaccines developed to fight the virus are rolling out in fits and starts.

Catherine Randolph was struck and killed on New Year’s Eve while walking across cavernous 122nd Avenue in Southeast Portland, the 18th and last pedestrian to die in 2020.
Police said Randolph, 51, was walking across the five-lane urban highway outside a crosswalk when the driver of a 2002 Honda Accord smashed into her near Southeast Tibbets Street, a stubby residential road that dead ends on either side of 122nd, one of Portland’s most dangerous streets no matter how you’re traveling.
