BC teacher suspended after showing class To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit movies

BC teacher suspended after showing class To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit movies A Prince George teacher has been handed a suspension and told to go on a course after a series of complaints were made against him. Andrew Michael Dennis – who works for School District 57 – was disciplined by the BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation in March, but his case was only made public this week. Among the complaints against Dennis is that in 2018 he showed his Grade 6/7 class a film version of the children’s classic “The Hobbit,” which the Commissioner said is not age-appropriate. He is also said to have shown the same class the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird,” which the Commissioner likewise said was unsuitable for the children.

Movies help earn suspension for teacher

The outcome stems from a series of incidents beginning with two complaints in October 2018 of Dennis showing movies outside the curriculum for his Grade 6-7 class.  A parent also raised concerns about the number of movies the class had watched generally and at least one student reported having trouble with the general noise level in the class. One of the movies shown was The Lottery, about the members of a small town who draw paper out of a box with the one who draws one with a dot on it being stoned to death. It is based on a short story included in the curriculum for Grades 11-12.

Early introduction to classic movies gets Prince George teacher in trouble | iNFOnews

When a Prince George teacher got in trouble for watching the movies To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit during class time, he complained about it to his students and turned the heat up on the hot water he was in. Now for that, and a few other issues including an unusual reenactment of another classic story, Andrew Michael Dennis has had his teacher’s licence suspended for a day and is being asked to take a course on professional boundaries, according to a Consent Resolution Agreement from the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation. Dennis has been a teacher since 2015, and was employed in the Prince George School District  Oct. 23, and Oct. 24, 2018, when the parents of two of his students made complaints to the Commissioner under the Teachers Act.
