COUNCIL officers tore down the prominent and eye-catching signs from the property of a serial litigant on Monday morning which were displayed to more than 20,000 passing cars a day.
Booval resident Russell Gordon Haig Mathews appealed a court order for him to pay a $30,000 fine this month in a dispute with Ipswich City Council over his political protest signs in the front yard of his Brisbane Road house.
Over the years his signs have targeted several high-profile politicians, police and legal figures with allegations of a âCatholic mafiaâ conspiracy against him. Ipswich City Council officers removed signs from the Booval property of Russell Gordon Haig Mathews on Monday. Photo: Andrew Korner

WHILE many of us are still in holiday mode, there has been plenty of news happening across Ipswich this week, as the dust settles on 2020 and we tentatively lift our heads to face 2021.
We may not be out of the COVID funk yet, but at least we can say at this point in time that there appears to have been no link with the new strain of coronavirus into the West Moreton Region.
A level of concern has been raised over how the new strain infiltrated the Brisbane region in the first place, and I’m sure the health authorities will be kept on their toes over the coming weeks.

When the floods hit full steam across Ipswich on the morning of Wednesday January 12, people were already prepared for the worst, but they were still in for a shock.
In the few days leading up to the peak, we had already witnessed tragedy in Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley, and with water also being released from a rapidly filling Wivenhoe Dam, it was pretty clear something awful was headed our way.
