Steven became the permanent secretary in april of 2016. Prior to that he was the permanent secretary for the department of energy and Climate Change and had distinguished career before that both in government and in the private sector. For those of you who dont know, the permanent secretary is the governments principle adviser on defense and has responsibility for policy, finance and planning as a departmental accounting officer.
