Overcoming Resistance to Increasing Affordability
The pandemic has worsened America’s affordability crises for both renters and potential homeowners. When people are priced out of Baltimore, East Oakland and other long affordable communities, something is badly out of whack.
We know how to address these crises. For low-income people, a combination of federal rent subsidies, new affordable units and strong rent controls and eviction protections. For potential homebuyers, cities must improve affordability by ensuring enough housing gets built to meet rising job and population growth.
Unfortunately, resistance to solving both crises remains fierce

Many of Seattle s mayoral campaign representatives have praised the city s unique public campaign financing program for limiting the influence of big donors and creating time and space for candidates to run on the issues. But that dynamic will soon change now that an independent expenditure supporting former Seattle City Council President Bruce Harrell has officially filed with the city s elections commission.

Seattle Deputy Mayor Casey Sixkiller is taking aim at his boss s job by announcing his own campaign for mayor on Tuesday.
Sixkiller currently serves under Mayor Jenny Durkan, who will not be seeking reelection, and has worked on a host of policies for her administration including its approach to homlessness. As a single dad raising three young kids in Seattle, I want them to see that real progress is possible. I want my kids to grow up in a city that turns the values of inclusion, fairness and equity into action, Sixkiller said in a statement Tuesday. Our city needs bold action, leadership experience, and a mayor who wakes up every day focused on rebuilding a more equitable, inclusive, and thriving city.

He’s got a famous last name, an impressive resume, and his negotiating skills have brought him high praise. Now, Seattle Deputy Mayor Casey Sixkiller will try to take things to the next level, as he seeks to take over the seat being vacated by his outgoing boss, Jenny Durkan.
Sixkiller has extensive experience in the political arena, having formerly served as a legislative assistant to former state Rep. Jim McDermott. He later shifted his sights to the other Washington where, as an enrolled Cherokee Nation citizen, he served as lead Cherokee Nation advocate to Congress before joining Senator Patty Murray’s staff in 2003.
