May 4, 2021 Share U.S. President Joe Biden, who initially decided to keep intact his predecessor’s historically low number of annual refugee admissions, Monday announced he is quadrupling this year’s total. “I am revising the United States’ annual refugee admissions cap to 62,500 for this fiscal year,” the president said in a statement Monday afternoon. “This erases the historically low number set by the previous administration of 15,000, which did not reflect America’s values as a nation that welcomes and supports refugees. The new admissions cap will also reinforce efforts that are already under way to expand the United States’ capacity to admit refugees, so that we can reach the goal of 125,000 refugee admissions that I intend to set for the coming fiscal year.”

An organization founded to oppose former President Trump Foreign Policy for America, a nonpartisan advocacy group, ranked all lawmakers from the 116th Congress on a scale of zero to 100 on dozens of policy issues where it takes a position. The scorecard is an effort to better engage voters on issues such as immigration and refugees, U.S. policy toward Iran and Yemen, climate change, global health, democracy and human rights.
