Russia: Violence against journalists intensifies
At least 120 cases of detention, obstruction and violence against journalists have been recorded on 31 January as a result of media coverage of protests in support of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and their affiliate the Russian Union of Journalists (RUJ) call on Russian authorities to stop intimidating journalists and let them do their job. On Sunday 31 January, tens of thousands of protesters took to streets across Russia to show support to the jailed opposition leader Aleksei Navalny. By late evening, more than 5,000 people had been detained in at least 85 cities across Russia, according to OVD Info, an independent NGO that monitors rallies.
