On April 1, 2009, President Obama and Russian President Medvedevissued a joint statement committing both states to arms control negotiations on strategic nuclear weapons. The U.S. should beginthese negotiations with matters that require immediate attention. The U.S. should allow the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty to expirein December rather than rush to negotiate a replacement on such ashort deadline.
President Obama has started planning a new round of nuclear arms negotiations with the Russians. He apparently hopes to rid the world of nuclear weapons. This indeed could be an opportune time to rethink arms control. And who doesn't want a world safe from nuclear Armageddon?
