Although the event started at 11 a.m., cars were lined up almost an hour before.
Rose Mitchell arrived in the YMCA parking lot at 10:15 a.m. to become the first in line.
Mitchell said she came because the cost of food is high and it’s been difficult to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables on a low income. Every little bit helps, she said.
The YMCA in Grand Rapids hosts regular events with the Veggie Van in its area. Community Collaborations Director Belisa Melton said her group put together the bags and then drove them down to Niles Tuesday morning.
