施設は築約120年、木造2階建ての元呉服店を改築した。蔵書は「遠野物語」など地元の民俗にまつわるものや東日本大震災について書かれたものなど約1万3千冊。そのうち350冊は36カ国の在日大使館から寄贈された。
式典では、新型コロナの影響で来られなかった安藤氏から「日本文学の原点である遠野の郷に、子どもたちがしっかり本を読める場所を作りたいと思っていた。たくさんの本を読みながら、過去を学び、今を考え、未来を想像してほしい」とメッセージが寄せられた。入館した遠野小4年の奥友瑠香さん（10）は「自分の好きな本が見つかりそう」と話した。
施設は午前9時半～午後5時半に開いていて入館無料。水曜休館。新型コロナの影響で、現在は専用のホームページから予約する必要がある。（中山直樹）
