LANGKAWI: Quick action by firemen averted a major disaster and possibly saved the tropical rainforest on this holiday island from being engulfed in fire.
Firemen managed to contain the blaze at the luxurious Andaman Resort to prevent it from spreading to the 10 million-year-old rainforest located within its vicinity at Datai Bay.
About 50 firemen were involved in the operation yesterday evening.
The fire, which started in the kitchen of the five-star hotel at about 4pm on Tuesday, destroyed almost the entire building which was constructed of timber.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 ― The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort which is a popular destination for revellers in Langkawi Island, is still affected by a fire which started yesterday.
According to a reader there who reached out to Malay Mail, the fire which destroyed the resort’s kitchen is also said to be affecting the rainforest nearby.

Andaman Luxury Collection Resort by Marriott in Langkawi, Malaysia and the property has been totally destroyed.
A crew of 40 firefighters has tried over a long period of time to get the fire under control which has pretty much gutted the resort.
The Andaman was a beautiful resort in Langkawi, one of my favorite destinations here in the Southeast Asia region.
The Star reported today that it will likely be out of business for a long period of time (if not forever) following the fire.
