Alaska gardeners should resolve to plant a row for the hungry this year
Print article I don’t normally make New Year’s resolutions. Today, however, I resolve to do more to get every gardener to plant a row in their garden to feed the hungry. Some readers may remember when we started to “Plant a Row for Beans” here in Anchorage. Then the program caught the eyes and hearts of garden writer friends who promoted this simplest of ideas nationally. They and their newspapers got behind “PAR,” asking gardeners to plant a row and then get the produce to someone who needs it.
Beyond poinsettias, here are suggestions for your Christmas plant collection

Print article Here we go, again. This column appears on a holiday. It is Christmas and once again, there is a Garden Writing rule I am required to follow. This must be the third or fourth time this year that I have had to conform to The Rules. Today, I have to write something horticulturally Christmas. Which got me thinking about a friend we have, a real collector of Christmas stuff, so much so that after moving, she had to use a rental storage unit when it wasn’t the season. And that got me wondering if there were folks who have collections of Christmas plants they bring out in bloom every year.
Print article Someone close to me thinks I phoned in last week’s mandatory holiday gift column. For one, I didn’t include amaryllis bulbs (wrong holiday!), Cobra Head weeding tools (what, you don’t have them already?), hose-end sprayers or seed germination heating mats (OK, I could have included them). This only proves my point, however: to each gardener, goes his or her own. Which begs the question of phoning in the column; I did not. In fact, I carefully research what the horticultural industry insiders are predicting will be the trend. Then I search around. I just don’t always agree with what is, or should be, trendy.
