Sustain ban on maize importation ― Maize farmers tell FG

Share The Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) has charged the Nigerian government to sustain the ban on Maize importation into the country to further boost maize production and encourage farmers. The National President of MAAN Dr Bello Abubakar made this call at the inauguration of the first National Maize Pyramids and flag-off of the 2021 wet season farming organized by MAAN in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Katsina state northwest Nigeria. Dr Abubakar said maize farmers in the country were currently producing enough to meet up the demand of maize in Nigeria. “We say no to maize importation into Nigeria and we will always support the Central Bank of Nigeria for denying maize importers forex because the CBN supports President Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda of ‘eat what we produce and produce what we Eat’ as far as maize is concerned we can produce enough for our consumption and industrial use”, he noted.

Nigeria to attain self sufficiency in maize production by 2022 CBN Governor On CBN Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefele says Nigeria is targeting to attain self sufficiency in maize production by 2022. Emefele made the disclosure on Thursday in Katsina at the launch of the 2021 maize wet season farming and first maize pyramid in Nigeria. He said that the country has witnessed remarkable increase in maize production during the past six years with support of the Anchor Borrower Programme. The CBN governor said that would be achieved through synergy between stakeholders and the resilience of farmers. “This event symbolises our commitment towards enabling self sufficiency in maize production by 2022 in Nigeria,” he stressed, adding that maize was one of the priority crops under the anchor borrower programme.

Emefiele Urges Nigerian Youths To Embrace Agriculture Vows To Resist Importation Of Maize In Nigeria

  Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele has urged youths in Nigeria to embrace agriculture, declaring the Bank’s readiness to support youths that are willing to engage in agriculture. Mr. Emefiele made the declaration in Katsina on Thursday, May 6, 2021, during the unveiling of the first maize pyramid and flag-off of the 2021 Maize wet season farming under the CBN-Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) Anchor Borrowers’ Programme. He expressed belief that Nigerian youth could leverage their talents, along with technological tools to improve farm productivity and delivery of agricultural produce to markets. While noting that agriculture offered significant benefits for the youth, Emefiele reiterated that the Bank had put in place several measures to improve access to credit for youths interested in Agriculture under the Anchor Borrowers Programme and the Agri Business Small and Medium Enterprise Investment Scheme(AGSMEIS).

• Expand operations in southern states, farmers urge CBN Farmers and their association have called on the Federal Government to use the Central Bank of Nigeria-managed Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP) to deepen food production in the southern states amid insecurity in the north. x They made the call while commending various interventions of the CBN across the country, especially in rice, maize, cocoa, oil palm, poultry, and cassava production. As of January 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) claimed it had disbursed N554.61 billion to 2,849,490 farmers to boost food security under its Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP) beginning from 2015.   Mr Godwin Emefiele, the CBN Governor, had earlier explained that out of the amount, N61.02 billion was disbursed to 353,370 dry season farmers.
