Notre Dame to promote racial justice with special shirts, shoes

Feb 24, 2021 On Sunday, the Notre Dame women’s basketball team will wear custom shoes and a pregame shirt to promote racial justice in its nationally televised game against the No. 6 Louisville Cardinals. The shirt and shoes feature art from local artist Kamika Perry, a Jamaican immigrant who has lived in the South Bend area for more than 10 years. Perry calls the artwork on the T-shirt “Hope.” It depicts a young Black woman wearing a Notre Dame jersey with her hair tied in the shape of two basketballs. The back of the shirt bears the message, “We hope, we inspire, we believe,” a quote from coach Niele Ivey.

The Irish defense secured its best showing of the season, holding Pitt to a season-low point total. Two of Notre Dame’s freshmen took the spotlight inside the Petersen Events Center. Maddy Westbeld led with a 20-point, 11-rebound, double-double, her second of the season. Meanwhile, Olivia Miles tied her season high of 10 points for a season straight game.

BLACKSBURG, VA. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball team (8-5, 6-3) achieved that elusive third straight win, starting its roadtrip with a 60-65 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies (7-6, 2-6). The Irish continue to ride their momentum, winning five of their past six, as they kicked off a daunting five-game road swing.    Destinee Walker scored 13 points in the second quarter before finishing with a team-high 16 points. Walker finished 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Dara Mabrey followed right behind with 14 points, which included four clutch free throws in the final minute.  Maddy Westbeld achieved her first career double-double on Thursday, posting 13 points and a career high 12 rebounds. Lastly, Anaya Peoples was crucial down the stretch, scoring eight of her 11 points in the final quarter.
