No. 10 Penn State women’s volleyball lost its series-opening match with No. 11 Purdue 3-1 (22-25, 24-26, 25-21, 14-25) Friday night at Rec Hall.
Despite keeping things relatively close all match long, the Nittany Lions simply couldn’t execute and finish the Boilermakers off when they were vulnerable.
How It Happened
Middle blocker Serena Gray rejoined Penn State’s starting lineup Friday night. She previously left the Nittany Lions’ February 20 matchup with Indiana early and did not return, and she didn’t play Wednesday night against Ohio State.
Penn State began Friday night’s match strong but soon fell behind 5-2 thanks to a 4-0 Purdue run. A kill from middle blocker Kaitlyn Hord stopped the bleeding, cutting Penn State’s deficit to 5-3.

Freshmen stole the show on both sides of the net. Ohio State’s Emily Londot posted a match-high 13 kills, while a pair of Nittany Lions provided Penn State a much-needed spark that helped the team remain competitive.
How It Happened
Freshman middle blocker Allie Holland started for the Nittany Lions Wednesday night, replacing Serena Gray in Penn State’s starting lineup.
Ohio State got off to a hot start and jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead thanks to all-around sloppy play on Penn State’s part. Head coach Russ Rose burned an early timeout as the Buckeyes used a 3-0 run to take a 13-7 lead, hitting at an incredible .471 clip at the time.
