Governor s Citizenship Medal winner Ananda Birungi on leadership, finding herself in community | Local News

Ananda Birungi immigrated to Thornton from her home country of Uganda when she was 14. Her mother had begun the immigration process before Birungi was born and after over a decade, it was finally her family’s turn to pursue the American dream. All Birungi knew of the U.S. she had seen in movies and television shows, but she soon found that the reality of America was little like her Hollywood expectations. Birungi’s parents struggled to find work while she struggled with her new identity as a Black American. “It was hard seeing myself as a Black person for the first time in America and having an African accent,” Birungi said. “I felt so insecure. I felt lost and I wasn’t confident in my identity.”

Colorado s top leaders of 2020 honored with Governor s Citizenship Medals

Eight of Colorado’s most exceptional leaders of 2020 have been awarded Governor’s Citizenship Medals, state officials announced Tuesday. The leadership development group CiviCO teamed up with Gov. Jared Polis to honor seven individuals and one organization for providing much-needed leadership in an unprecedented year that included a global pandemic and widespread civic unrest. “These eight remarkable leaders have paved the way for community advancement and put Colorado on the map for how individuals and organizations serve their communities and make statewide impact,” Polis said in a news release. The recipients will be feted at a virtual event as part of Colorado Leadership Month, the release stated.
