Europol should step up data exchange on civil unrest , Council Presidency proposes
07 May 2021
Europol should exchange information with national authorities regarding the prevention of violent demonstrations and civil unrest, say a draft set of Council conclusions on lessons learned from the pandemic for internal security and law enforcement.
The draft conclusions (pdf), prepared by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council, were circulated to national delegations on 23 April and due to be discussed at a meeting of the Law Enforcement Working Party on 26 April.
Introducing the text, the Presidency states that lockdown measures have led to significant changes in criminal activity - for example, counterfeiting, cybercrime and domestic violence - as well as public disorder and civil unrest – caused by public protests (sometimes violent) against lockdowns and other restrictive measures.

Philippines looks to improve disaster preparedness with geospatial tech
by Rosy Mina on 10 March 2021
The Philippines is among the topmost vulnerable countries in the world to natural disasters and climate impacts.
Last year, the country experienced a volcanic eruption, a series of major earthquakes, and successive typhoons that inundated more than 60 towns and cities.
Knowing the country’s vulnerability level to disasters, various government agencies rolled out a series of apps to aid local government officials in crafting local solutions to these disasters.
These solutions are based on the National Exposure Database (NED), a platform that collates data to aid in policymaking.

Austin s highly unusual order for a military-wide stand-down, slated to pause normal operations in coming weeks so troops can discuss internal support for extremist movements, underscores the urgency of the task ahead for the former four-star general, who last month became the nation s first African American Pentagon chief.
