17 CIDG men facing murder raps deserve all legal remedies: PNP

MANILA - Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said all 17 operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) "deserve" to avail all legal remedies amid the murder charges they are facing in connection with the death of a couple during a police operation in Batangas last year. This, as Carlos assured that the 17 operatives of the PNP-CIDG Region 4-A are all accounted for and ready to attend indictment for a murder case filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NIB) over the death of couple Ariel and Ana Mariz Lemita-Evangelista. "This is among the occupational risks faced by police personnel arising from service-related circumstances and regular performance of duty. Our personnel deserve to avail of all legal remedies provided by law," Carlos said in a statement on Saturday. Cristina Palabay, secretary general of Karapatan, said that two months is already too long since the Department of Justice’s Administrative Order No. 35 (AO 35) Committee has pledged to investigate the killings of the nine activists. On March 7, nine activists in four provinces of Calabarzon (Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon) were killed in what is now known as “Bloody Sunday”. Palabay added that the families of the victims are also experiencing harassment by state forces. She urged Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to step up and talk to members of the AO 35 to stop harassing witnesses.
