Elgin officials are seeing the greatest interest in becoming a police officer since before COVID and the murder of George Floyd. Chief Ana Lalley is attributing it to the recent switch to allowing people with a high school diploma or GED to apply rather than requiring a college degree.
The Elgin Police Department recently was accredited by the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. The department s policies and procedures were evaluated against established industry criteria during a visit by evaluators in November.
Elgin police officials said on a Friday radio show they are pleased with the flexibility and clarity they will have under revisions to the statewide SAFE-T Act approved last week.
