Museums shine a spotlight on Edinburgh s influential women

MARKING International Women’s Day 2021, curators from Museums & Galleries Edinburgh have taken the opportunity to shine a spotlight on a selection of fascinating women from Edinburgh’s past. Running from March 8-12, the series profiles five pioneering women whose lives are reflected in the city’s history collections. They include Ella Morrison Millar, Edinburgh’s first female town councillor; Nannie (Agnes Henderson) Brown, a prominent suffragist; Lileen Hardy, who opened the St Saviour’s Child Garden in the Canongate; Helen Monro Turner, who founded the studio glass department at Edinburgh College of Art and Ena Thomson, who served as an air raid warden in the Second World War.

MEMBERS of the public are being given the chance to vote on whether Edinburgh s Christmas and Hogmanay celebrations should go ahead this coming year. The City of Edinburgh Council has today launched a new consultation, asking citizens for their views on the city s iconic events in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The twelve-week survey is being carried out by independent market research company Progressive on behalf of the council. Not only is it seeking feedback from the capital’s residents, it is also reaching out to Edinburgh s communities and businesses on how Edinburgh’s Christmas and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay should be delivered from 2022 onwards.
