Country Music Memories: The Bluebird Cafe Opens in Nashville

In June of 1982, something monumental happened in Nashville, Tenn.: The famous Bluebird Cafe opened its doors. Since that month, 39 years ago, the venue has become one of the most coveted and prestigious show locations in Music City, especially for songwriters. Founder Amy Kurland originally intended for the Bluebird Cafe to be a restaurant with a small stage, which she added to the 90-seat venue to attract customers. But then, patrons began flocking to the Bluebird located in a strip mall just outside of downtown Nashville to hear live music moreso than to eat. Kathy Mattea, one of the first performers at the Bluebird Cafe, landed a record deal following seven months of regular performances at the venue.

100 Years of Country Music History

100 Years of Country Music History By Abby Monteil, Stacker News On 4/10/21 at 9:00 AM EDT Over the past century, the country music genre has become one of the most popular and recognizable within the American music industry. It first originated in the early 1900s, particularly among working-class Southern Americans. Elements of fiddle songs, ballads, banjo, jazz, and blues became entangled together, leading to its official recognition as a genre (often referred to as hillbilly music ) by the 1920s. From there, country music grew roots in the city of Nashville, Tennessee, where the Grand Ole Opry radio and television show launched the careers of icons like Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. It was also the place where the genre had its Big Bang moment, when talent scout Ralph Peer began to scout Southern talent and came away with legendary acts that would continue to shape the genre and put Nashville on the map as Music City.

Transparency: Where s Philly s fiscal watchdog? - Philadelphia Weekly

Philadelphia recently continued to show gaps in public oversight. Amid calls for the police commissioner to resign, the city’s growing murder crisis is already up 46 percent from last year’s record-setting rate. At the same time, a scandal surfaced that showed the mayor and City Council entrusted the roll out of COVID vaccines to a 22-year-old huckster with no health-care background. Furthermore, a report paid for by the City Controller’s office showed how the city failed to prepare for a constant barrage of unlawful protests following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota. When looking at these latest examples of ethical mismanagement in a city with America’s fourth-highest tax burden, citizens are left wondering why the city doesn’t have an effective watchdog.
