Like us on Facebook.   HALIFAX — In a race where building trust in the local government was a recurring theme among candidates, a three-year term on the Select Board went to Peter Silverberg. On Tuesday, Silverberg beat out incumbent Mitchell Green, who has served on the board for about four years and received pushback over the last year for being one of two board members who negotiated a deal to buy land to use as a gravel pit from another board member. The purchase ultimately fell through but the process was deemed “shady” by residents. He received 140 votes compared to 38 for Green; 41 for Bob Teree, who has often been critical of the board over the last year and sought to increase transparency; 25 for Amy Kamstra, who was elected to the Halifax School Board on Tuesday after running unopposed; and five for Greg Marguet, who didn’t participate in the candidates forum.

Incumbent Mitchell Green answered one about whether the board has any etiquette or policy about candidates convicted of a crime. He said board members are elected and they cannot tell each other how to do their job. “I’m totally not the person I was 30 years ago,” he said Tuesday during the forum held by conference call while explaining that a conviction has no effect on his performance as a board member.

Halifax avoids backlash, sticks with ballots by request

Town Clerk Patricia Dow called the state’s decision to mail ballots to every voter for the November election a “great idea” but reported hearing a lot of backlash from voters. “There were a lot of complaints I heard along the way,” she said at the Select Board meeting held remotely Monday, describing how some voters thought the ballot wouldn’t be the same one offered at the polls on election day and some threw theirs away upon receiving it. “It was confusing to some that they had to return their unvoted ballot if they wanted to vote at the polls in person.”
