MADISON, WIS .- MFA candidate Roberto Torres Mata’s exhibition Untethered: Our Journey Beyond Borders takes the 2021 Russell and Paula Panczenko MFA Prize. The exhibition is on view in the Garfield Galleries April 6-May 14, 2021. Visitors will be led on a journey through the exhibition, guided by a path of migrating birds. Archaic symbols impressed into handmade paper evoke indigenous cultures of the Americas, while the words of migrants themselves are recorded on linen sheets suspended from the gallery ceiling—a work made in collaboration with Dani Zelko.

University Opera returns with a spring production mixing filmed and staged elements. What’s Past is Prologue examines history while considering current events. Texts by or about U.S. figures — Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain and Walt Whitman — are set to songs or song cycles by composers Christopher Berg, Margaret Bonds, Tom Cipullo, Michael Daugherty, Scott Gendel, Jennifer Higdon, John Kander, Steven Mark Kohn, Ned Rorem and Gwyneth Walker. Search underway for new director of Division of the Arts A search-and-screen committee has been appointed to help identify and select candidates for the next director of the Division of the Arts. The committee is being chaired by Soyeon Shim, dean of the School of Human Ecology. Other committee members include: Faisal Abdu’Allah, professor in the School of Education’s Art Department; Li Chiao-Ping, professor in the School of Education’s Dance Department; Amy Gilman, Director of the Chazen Museum of Art; Carolyn Kallenborn, professor in the School of Human Ecology; Angela H. Richardson of the Bolz Center for Arts Administration in the Wisconsin School of Business; Porter Shreve, professor of English; Beth Snodgrass, director of the Wisconsin Union Theater; Sofia Snow, director, First Wave, Division of Diversity, Equity & Educational Achievement; and Johannes Wallmann, associate professor in the Mead Witter School of Music.
