The parents of a Sullivan man killed in a car crash will receive a $25,000 settlement from the insurance company of the other driver, according to electronic court records.Â
Mason Kirk, 18, was killed in a September 2018 crash on Route H in rural Franklin County, according to a report filed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.Â
Kirkâs parents â Edward M. Kirk and Amy Garner, both of Sullivan â filed a lawsuit in June 2019 seeking damages from the other driver, Alyssa Sharp, and American Honda Motor Co., the manufacturer of Kirkâs vehicle, a 2018 Honda Pilot.Â
The settlement, which was presented Thursday in the Franklin County Circuit Court by Judge Craig Hellmann, was for the maximum amount allowed per Sharpâs insurance. The settlement does not settle the entire case as the suit against American Honda continues with a possible 10-day jury trial set to begin Sept. 27, 2021, with jury selection and closing arguments tentatively set for Oct. 8. Â
The COVID-19 pandemic may accelerate the closures of rural hospitals that already began the year on the brink. With cases and hospitalization rates expected to continue growing through the winter months, hospitals that remain open in rural communities are under enormous financial pressure.
It’s a struggle particularly felt in the South. Of the 134 rural hospitals to close in the past decade, 50 have been in the Southern states, according to data from the Rural Health Research Program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Often, the closures have occurred in communities laden with vulnerable populations that are more susceptible to the novel coronavirus, said Alan Morgan, the chief executive officer for the National Rural Hospital Association.
COVID-19 continues to strain local healthcare system

Now, it’s causing an unprecedented strain on our healthcare system.
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital is currently using all of their ventilators and more, according to Amy Garner with West Tennessee Healthcare.
“We’ve ordered more ventilators and are asking for more from the state,” she said.
And finding one?
“I spent hours last night in contact between the state and EMA trying to find ventilators to send down here,” said Wayne Arnold, the regional hospital coordinator for the Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department.
Garner says they currently they have 117 COVID-positive patients. That’s 21% of the overall census at the hospital. And others in the system aren’t faring any better. Garner said roughly half of Dyersburg’s patients are also COVID-positive.
