Settlement Reached In Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The parents of a Sullivan man killed in a car crash will receive a $25,000 settlement from the insurance company of the other driver, according to electronic court records.  Mason Kirk, 18, was killed in a September 2018 crash on Route H in rural Franklin County, according to a report filed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.  Kirk’s parents — Edward M. Kirk and Amy Garner, both of Sullivan — filed a lawsuit in June 2019 seeking damages from the other driver, Alyssa Sharp, and American Honda Motor Co., the manufacturer of Kirk’s vehicle, a 2018 Honda Pilot.  The settlement, which was presented Thursday in the Franklin County Circuit Court by Judge Craig Hellmann, was for the maximum amount allowed per Sharp’s insurance. The settlement does not settle the entire case as the suit against American Honda continues with a possible 10-day jury trial set to begin Sept. 27, 2021, with jury selection and closing arguments tentatively set for Oct. 8.

How rural Southern towns fight COVID-19 without a hospital

The COVID-19 pandemic may accelerate the closures of rural hospitals that already began the year on the brink. With cases and hospitalization rates expected to continue growing through the winter months, hospitals that remain open in rural communities are under enormous financial pressure.  It’s a struggle particularly felt in the South. Of the 134 rural hospitals to close in the past decade, 50 have been in the Southern states, according to data from the Rural Health Research Program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Often, the closures have occurred in communities laden with vulnerable populations that are more susceptible to the novel coronavirus, said Alan Morgan, the chief executive officer for the National Rural Hospital Association.

didn t mr. gingrich say today that mr. romney was like the most dishonest presidential candidate ever in american history? in an interview with my colleague, amy garner at the washington post, he said what mitt romney did to him last night during the debate was the most dishonest thing he had ever seen in presidential politics. mind you, this is a man who is old enough to remember watergate. so it was a pretty extraordinary statement. karen, in terms of the republican establishment, we are seeing marco rubio complaining a little bit about newt gingrich, neither he nor rick scott, the medicare fraud tainted florida governor, nor jeb bush, the very popular former governor in florida, they are not endorsing anybody. if the establishment is so squarely behind romney and anti-newt gingrich, why isn t the florida republican establishment doing that same thing?
