LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California health officials set new rules on Friday that would allow Disneyland and other theme parks, stadiums and outdoor entertainment venues to reopen as early as April 1, after a closure of nearly a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
But the return of Mickey Mouse to the “Happiest Place on Earth” and live spectators to the California ball parks of America’s favorite pastime still come with major caveats.
Theme and amusement parks would be permitted to restart on April 1 with severely limited capacity, but only if the counties where they operate are removed from the “purple” tier of California’s color-coded COVID-19 restrictions, the system’s most stringent classification.
Genting Malaysia Bhd has invested over $800 million in its new theme park, Genting SkyWorlds, targeted for opening in the second quarter of this year, the company said in a virtual briefing on Tuesday.

(Reuters) - He may be a giant panda, but for now Xiao Qi Ji is still a baby, romping with toys and snacking on sweet potato, his first solid food.
The adorable cub made his debut virtually on Wednesday at the National Zoo in Washington, appearing live on ‘Panda Cam’ as the zoo is closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Cooked sweet potato. It’s nice and soft and is easy for him to eat,” said zookeeper Marty Dearie, laughing as Xiao Qi Ji munched away.
Xiao Qi Ji is the son of Mei Xiang, who gave birth to him at the zoo, thrilling panda enthusiasts and zoo officials who thought at age 22 she had a slim chance of having a fourth healthy cub.

LOS ANGELES, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Two captive gorillas at the San Diego Zoo have tested positive for COVID-19 after falling ill, and a third gorilla appears also to be symptomatic, California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Monday in an online update about the coronavirus pandemic.
Newsom said the source of infection is still being investigated to determine whether the virus was transmitted between animals or from humans to the apes. (Reporting by Steve Gorman in Los Angeles; Editing by Leslie Adler)
