Development of a new water treatment plant on the North Saskatchewan River, and a pipeline that will serve the Town of Shellbrook, recently took another step forward.
The Prince Albert Rural Water Utility (PARWU) board passed a resolution at a special meeting on April 29 to move to the next phase.
PARWU purchases water from the City of Prince Albert that serves a network of customers in the RM of Buckland, the RM of Prince Albert, the Muskoday First Nation and the RM of Duck Lake. With this resolution, they have invited the RM of Shellbrook and the Town of Shellbrook to join their board for regional collaboration to enlarge the PARWU’s ability to service more municipalities with fresh, good drinking water.
A four year endeavor to give the Richardson Pioneer Recreation Centre in Shellbrook a much needed facelift, has officially wrapped up.
The work done included major upgrades to the rink surface, heating system, bathrooms and lobby area, as well as the installation of a solar panel array outside the facility. In addition to lowering the rink’s carbon footprint, the town will also receive full retail value for electricity generated, through Saskatchewan’s Net Metering program.
While the initial cost of the project was predicted to be over $2.1 million dollars, the steering committee came in under budget at just under $1.9 million. Mayor Amund Otterson attributed the difference to extensive help and support from volunteers, as well as an extension to the original one year plan.
A building that once housed a railway station in Shellbrook and, in more recent years, is also the town’s oldest artifacts, may be getting a makeover.
A proposal submitted to and agreed to by town council discusses plans to sell the building to a local non-profit organization, who would use it for artisan events and farmers markets. If the non-profit can form and submit a viable business plan by Sept. 1, they would then be allowed to purchase the building for $1. To provide the non-profit with enough time to become viable, the town would then offer them a tax exemption for one year.
