Amra Boricha RAJKOT: As many as 2,000 people from across Gujarat are expected to gather to pay tribute to slain Dalit RTI activists Amra Boricha in Sanodar village of Bhavnagar district on Sunday. In wake of congregating which will include Dalit leaders, the district administration has deployed heavy security in the village and strengthened the patrolling to avoid any untoward incident. Boricha was killed in his house allegedly by members of upper caste community on March 2 following a victory procession after the election results of the local body was declared. It was alleged by Boricha’s family that the murder was a fallout of a past dispute between the deceased and the accused over filing of police complaint. The accused had also allegedly pressurised Boricha to withdraw the complaint. Boricha who was under police protection was attacked by the accused armed with sharp-edged weapons, iron pipes and sticks.

Rajkot: A relative of slain RTI activist Amra Boricha was threatened in Bhandaria village of Bhavnagar district on Tuesday allegedly for attending Boricha’s funeral. Mohan Makwana (67), a resident of Bhandaria lodged a complaint against Kshatrapa Odarka and one unidentified person for allegedly thrashing and threatening him for attending the funeral of Boricha in Sanodar village in Ghogha taluka in Bhavnagar. Boricha, who was provided police protection after a threat to his life, was murdered near his house in Sanodar village last week. Police have booked ten persons for the murder of Boricha. “On Tuesday night, when I was returning from my farm, two persons on a bike passed by me. After going a distance, they returned and threatened me for attending the last rites of Boricha. They said I will end up the same way. They also hurled caste-based abuses at me,” alleged in his police complaint.

Boricha was killed by 10 people who barged into his house and attacked him with sharp weapons on Tuesday. The murder was a fall-out of an eight-year-old dispute over settling the atrocity complaint he had lodged against some of them. Arvind Makwana, district coordinator of Navsarjan Trust, a human rights organization said, “He was very active in Dalit movements and that’s why the family decided to perform his last rites with Buddhist rituals.” A condolence meeting for Boricha is planned on March 14 in which victims of oppression by upper caste from all over the state are expected to join. “There are many people who wanted to come to express their condolences and we received several phone calls from other victims also. So, we decided to organize public tribute function on March 14 in which all these people will remain present,” said Mavji Sarvaiya, a local Dalit leader.
